Forest Lake and Hazel Creek Lake are the two sources of drinking water for thousands of citizens in Adair County, Missouri. These two surface waters are on the Missouri Department of Natural Resources [DNR] 303d Impaired Waters List. The critical water quality challenge in both watersheds is nutrient pollution.
An environmental and public health analysis was conducted for the Forest Lake Watershed over the course of several years. Using the most recent data available, multiple products were created for educational purposes to be used by various organizations and partners.
The project is a collaboration between A.T. Still University's College of Graduate Health Studies', master of public health program, and the Missouri Department of Conservation [MDC].
ArcGIS 10.5.1 was used to create a single project file compiling over 100 layers and sublayers of environmental data for the Forest Lake Watershed in Adair County, Missouri.
ArcGIS is a geographic information system [GIS] computer software for working with maps and geographic information maintained by the Environmental System Research Institute [ESRI].
A series of five printed maps were developed from the original ArcGIS project file and disseminated locally.
The Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services, Missouri Public Health Information Management System [MOPHIMS], "provides a common means for users to access public health related data to assist in defining the health status and needs of Missourians.”
Rates of chronic disease deaths due to cancer, kidney disease, and diabetes in Adair county are significantly higher than the state of Missouri.
Death rates are annualized per 100,000 residents and are age adjusted to the U.S. 2000 standard population, for each year between 1999-2019.
